Order in the Court!!
Description:
Today you and your classmates will be lawyers in the highest court in the land. Half of the class is arguing to the Supreme Court that segregation in public schools is not only just but it is morally right and acceptable. The other half of the class is responsible for convincing the Supreme Court Justices that segregation is inherently wrong and that public schools should be integrated. Go on a Webquest and research your arguments. Famous Supreme Court decisions like Plessy Vs. Ferguson and Brown Vs. Board of Education should be helpful to each of your arguments.
After each group has had ample time for research and organizing your arguments you will be tasked with going to trial. Your instructor will play the Supreme Court Justices and it will be up to your team’s performance to sway the decision of the court. Remember to use facts, examples and previous court precedents to make your points more valid. Ethos, Pathos and Logos are all very important to coming up with convincing arguments.
